This scope for freewill and creative liberty does not
imply that right and wrong are purely relative terms amongst Tolkien’s peoples,
or that ‘anything goes’. As Aragorn says, Good
and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves
and Dwarves and another among Men. Evil undeniably exists, but it is good
and appropriate for each culture and each individual to have a distinct
perspective on what it is to avoid it, and in so doing live a full and virtuous
life.
